AIDS-related stigma and discrimination leads to gross
violations of the human rights of people living with HIV. Most people diagnosed
as HIV-positive have experienced some discrimination within the health sector,
including delayed treatment and denial of treatment and care. Many have lost
their jobs, their homes, and even their children because their HIV-status was
disclosed to others against their will. Some people living with HIV have been
killed by family or community members because of the gross fear and ignorance
surrounding HIV and AIDS. To address the human rights of people living with
HIV, GNP+ runs multiple programmes with the aim of enabling people living with
HIV to lead lives free of stigma and discrimination and enjoy full human
rights.
Human Rights Count!
An online database where people living
with HIV worldwide submit human rights violations against PLHIV. This
database feeds evidence into advocacy efforts of people living with HIV
and their supporters.
Global Criminalisation Scan
This scan is being carried out by
PLHIV on a global scale. National laws of all countries will be screened
for laws, regulations, and legislation around the criminalisation of HIV
transmission. GNP+ has plans to organise a global consultation for people
living with HIV to find a common position on the criminalisation of the transmission
of HIV. The international scan will aid advocates to change the laws of
their countries.
PLHIV stigma index
In order to measure the levels of AIDS-related stigma, GNP+ has
developed a Stigma Index in collaboration with ICW, UNAIDS and IPPF. This
is a community-based research tool that can be used in a variety of
settings to determine the extent of stigma that currently exists. The
Stigma Index is a peer-led research project running in six countries.
