Civil Society at 2009 HIV/AIDS Implementers'€™ Meeting

Windhoek, Namibia, 9 June 2009: GNP+ and UNAIDS held a Civil Society Pre-Meeting to the 2009 HIV/AIDS Implementers’ Meeting in Windhoek, Namibia. The pre-Meeting aimed to strengthen the participation of civil society attendees to the conference and increase its active participation. The Implementers’ Meeting is an annual conference that focuses on implementation of best practices and lessons learnt for HIV implementers worldwide. The Meeting is co-sponsored by the Global Fund, GNP+, PEPFAR, UNAIDS, UNICEF, WHO and the World Bank. The 2009 theme is Optimising the response: Partnerships for Sustainability.

As a co-sponsor on behalf of civil society, GNP+ aims to strengthen the participation of organisations led by people living with HIV and other civil society, and advocate for the needs and rights of people living with HIV at different institutional levels. Key issues that emerged from the meeting were: Criminalization of HIV Transmission; Enabling environments; Stigma; Youth and Gender.
