Roll out intensifies in 2009 and 2010
Networks of people living with HIV in ten countries in Africa, Asia and Europe started the national implementation of the PLHIV stigma index during 2009. Initial results from Belarus, China, Ethiopia , Kenya, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Pakistan, Philippines, United Kingdom, and Zambia are being analysed and starting to be disseminated at a country level.
The national Roll-outs in China and the UK were mentioned in the February 2010 letter to partners from the UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé who attended the formal launch of the first findings report in China.
Throughout 2009 the PLHIV Stigma Index was recognized at international and regional meetings and conferences including being mentioned in several workshops, presentations and abstracts at the 9th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) in Bali.
As part of developing a process to capture the journey of participants involved in the research GNP+ also supported work in the UK to enable critical reflection of the community research team; to capture anecdotes about the support and outreach during the research process and to develop and pilot a qualitative process that could be adapted to other countries.
In 2010 several more countries who developed plans for national roll-out during 2009 in negotiation and liaison with the PLHIV Stigma Index partnership and are commencing roll-out – including Brazil, Cameroun, Estonia, Georgia, Mexico, Moldova, Paraguay, Russian Federation, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine. Several of the country teams who completed the research compoment of the Index in 2009 and early 2010 will be presenting results at AIDS2010 - Vienna.
