GNP+ at AIDS2012

AIDS2012mastTheme-color-full_WEBThe International AIDS Conference (IAC) is regarded as the premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policymakers, people living with HIV, and others committed to ending the epidemic. The biennial conference is convened by the International AIDS Society (IAS), and will take place from 22 to 27 July 2012 in Washington DC. For more information on AIDS 2012 visit www.aids2012.org

As one of the official international civil society partners of the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012), GNP+ aims to strengthen the participation and input into the conference of people living with HIV and their networks. Towards the conference GNP+ will provide information around the conference and consult extensively with people living with HIV worldwide. Below you will read how GNP+ will do this.

Over the years there has been increasing recognition of the role of the community sector in the HIV response. Consequently, the role of communities in the process of defining and shaping the IAC programme is now more critical than ever.

GNP+ seeks to ensure that people living with HIV are meaningfully involved in the conference and the formation of its programme. To achieve this, GNP+ will reach out actively towards people living with HIV worldwide to:

  • Optimize participation of people living with HIV at AIDS 2012 and affiliated events
  • Inform AIDS 2012 sessions and events through meaningful and informed participation of people living with HIV;
  • Ensure meaningful input from people living with HIV into science and advocacy tracks of AIDS 2012;
  • Inform follow up activities for people living with HIV, based on the evidence presented at AIDS 2012.

Get involved in AIDS 2012!

GNP+ calls on people living with HIV worldwide to get involved in AIDS 2012 to share their knowledge and experience.

AIDS 2012 is the 19th International AIDS Conference and will be held in Washington DC, U.S. on 22-27 July 2012. The conference theme Turning the Tide Together emphasizes that the HIV epidemic has reached a defining moment and that by acting decisively and collectively, we now have the potential to end the HIV epidemic.

People living with HIV worldwide know best how to effectively implement scaling up prevention, treatment and care activities in the HIV response. GNP+ therefore encourages people living with HIV to get involved in AIDS 2012 by submitting abstracts and applying for workshops.

The deadline for submitting abstracts and workshops and scholarship applications is February 15th!

Consultations on key priorities for People Living with HIV

As part of the role of civil society partner, GNP+ undertakes regular consultations with regional and country stakeholders to inform the programming and policy discussions within the Conference Coordinating Committee.

This consultative process includes e-consultations as well as discussion opportunities during other conferences and meetings to identify common positions and understanding of key priorities for PLHIV. The programmatic development process for the 13th International conference of people living with HIV, LIVING2012, will also be a key component to develop the priorities.

Roadmap to AIDS2012 for People Living with HIV

The IAC is the largest conference on HIV globally, and offers hundreds of programme sessions that cover a number of diverse topics, many designed to cater to certain segments of the conference delegates. Following the success of similar publications during AIDS 2008 and AIDS 2010, GNP+ intends to produce a Roadmap to AIDS 2012 – Key Areas of Special Interest to People Living with HIV.

The roadmap provides guidance for People Living with HIV and other people interested in selected key sessions, satellites and discussions based on key priorities for people living with HIV as identified through the consultative process. The roadmap will be distributed as a conference bag insert and will be available in this section of the GNP+ website.

Technical support for people living with HIV in developing abstract submissions

GNP+ will provide direct technical support to national and regional networks of people living with HIV in developing abstract submissions. Many of these networks collaborate with GNP+ programmatically.

As part of this process, GNP+ will develop guidance material on how community-based participants can get involved, including applying for abstract submissions. This material will be shared through the community website which is coordinated by ICASO: www.aids2012community.org.

Evaluation and analysis of conference outcomes

GNP+ plans for post-conference analysis of discussions and outcomes of the conference compared to the priorities identified by people living with HIV during the consultations prior to the conference. This analysis will feed into programmes and advocacy work undertaken at global, regional and country levels.
