GNP+ and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance (the Alliance) held a workshop on 6 – 9 December 2010 in Dakar, Senegal to discuss how people living with HIV are involved in delivering HIV programmes in countries. Although the principle of the greater involvement of people living with HIV (GIPA) is not new, it is important to regularly revisit how it is being applied in HIV programmes so that people living with HIV can play an effective role in how HIV work is shaped and run in their countries.

This was the first time that GNP+ and the Alliance used the recently developed GIPA Good Practice Guide to lead a workshop with partners across Africa about how to meaningfully involve people living with HIV in programmes.

Participants at the workshop shared examples of how they are putting the GIPA principle into practice in their countries and they developed individual action plans to advocate for better involvement of people living with HIV in their work nationally.

The workshop was attended by 47 participants from networks of people living with HIV, Alliance linking organisations and country offices, the UN and civil society from 19 countries in the African region.
