NGO Code of Good Practice

The NGO Code of Good Practice was developed by NGOs for NGOs, to help guide our work by providing a framework to which we can commit and be held accountable. Drawing on 20 years of knowledge and experience, the Code sets out key principles, practice and evidence base required for successful responses to HIV.

After the initial set up in 2004, a large number of international NGOs working in HIV endorsed the Code. A second drive for endorsements took place in 2007/2008 as part of a project supported by the Ford Foundation and DfID.

NGO Code of Good Practice Self Assessment tools

A series of self-assessment tools has been developed to help NGOs measure whether the organisation's programmes stand in line with the NGO Code of Good Practice. In completing each module, NGOs should be able to identify areas in their programmes that are already at a good practice level, as well as areas that can be developed and strengthened to meet the Code's principles through action plans.

Put the Code's principles into practice and download the checklists from the website of the NGO Code of Good Practice. Many of the self assessment tools are also available in Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish.
