Young people living with HIV

YPLHIV Programme

An estimated 33.2 million people are living with HIV, of whom 5.4 million are young people. 40% of new infections are amongst 15-24 year olds, most of them female. However, in the global response to HIV there is a massive gap in the support and the meaningful and engaged participation of youth living with HIV (YPLHIV).

GNP+ is strengthening the position of young people living with HIV within networks through a Young People Living with HIV (YPLHIV) programme. The programme aims to ensure that all GNP+ platforms responds to the specific needs of YPLHIV, and also give a voice to YPLHIV around the world to guide and support the spaces that affect their lives.

GNP+ will work to support and broaden networking and collaboration amongst stakeholders to facilitate an enabling environment within GNP+ and the regional people living with HIV networks for youth living with HIV. This initiative is driven by youth living with HIV.

Crowdsourcing the UNAIDS new strategy on HIV and young people

crowdUNAIDS have launched CrowdOutAIDS.org to increase contributions from young people to the agency’s New Generation Leadership Strategy. CrowdOutAIDS.org is an online collaborative project set up by young people working at UNAIDS and across different networks.

UNAIDS are using a crowd sourcing approach to ensure fullest participation of young people in the development of this strategy, bearing in mind the core principles of meaningful youth engagement: inclusivity, transparency and accountability. Through the online wiki-like platform at crowdoutaids.org, young people have a unique opportunity to shape the NGL strategy. The process will conclude by mid-January 2012

Building sustainable leadership within the positive community: YPLHIV Leadership

YLeadershipGNP+, with support from the Ford Foundation, has embarked on a set of consultative processes to identify the priority leadership needs of young people living with HIV and strategies how to best address these needs. This has been done with a view to sustaining the considerable contribution that the positive community has made to global efforts around HIV.

The community of people living with HIV have played a critical role in the HIV response over the last 30 years: from the development of the Denver Principles, articulating the immediate needs and priorities for people living with HIV, in the 1980s, to the treatment activism that made living a long life with HIV a reality for millions in the 1990s, to the Universal Access and human rights discourses of the last 10 years where people living with HIV have been at the centre of the response.
