Ukraine presents results PLHIV Stigma Index

Stigma_index_ukraine-W70Results from the PLHIV Stigma Index in the Ukraine show that stigma, discrimination and human rights violations against people living with HIV are extensive throughout the country.

The PLHIV Stigma Index in the Ukraine was implemented and led by the All-Ukrainian Network of People living with HIV.

The results were first presented at the Regional Consultation on Universal Access to HIV Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support in Europe and Central Asia, in Kiev on the 16-17 March 2011.

Results

  • 1,500 respondents living with HIV from ten regions of Ukraine took part in the research;
  • In the past 12 months preceding the interviews 51 % of people living with HIV experienced acts of stigma and discrimination for reasons that included their HIV status;
  • 30% of people living with HIV experienced being gossiped about;
  • 18 % of people living with HIV experienced verbal abuse;
  • 6% of people living with HIV stated they have been physically assaulted.

PLHIV Stigma Index in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

The All-Ukrainian Network of People living with HIV is one of 5 country networks of people living with HIV implementing the PLHIV Stigma Index in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The Stigma Index is currently being implemented in Estonia, Moldova, Poland and Turkey. GNP+ is working in partnership with and providing technical support to the All-Ukrainian Network of People living with HIV, and other regional networks, on behalf of the International PLHIV Stigma Index partnership.
