Ending Vertical Transmission

In the global scale-up of efforts to end vertical transmission, GNP+ is collaborating with partner organisations and networks to promote the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women living with HIV. Upholding the health and dignity of women living with HIV is key in supporting HIV-positive women, their partners and families in accessing family planning and antenatal services to prevent new HIV infections.

The leadership of people living with HIV in the prevention of vertical transmission is vital, particularly as countries focus on increased testing and biomedical interventions aimed at pregnant women and infants.

Recently GNP+ partnered with ICW Global to conduct a global consultation to solicit the views of people living with HIV on barriers and opportunities in relation to the prevention of vertical transmission. The findings of the consultations are informing GNP+’s global advocacy on the prevention of vertical transmission, particularly in its role as a member of the Interagency Task Team  on the Prevention of HIV in Pregnant Women, Mothers and their Infants.

Briefing Paper on the Global Plan

At ICASA 2011 in Addis Abeba, GNP+, ICW Global and ITPC jointly launched a briefing paper for people living with HIV on the implications of the ‘Global Plan towards the Elimination of New HIV Infections among Children by 2015 and Keeping their Mothers Alive’.

The briefing paper highlights opportunities presented by the Global Plan to strengthen existing efforts to end vertical transmission and support mothers in 22 low- and middle-income countries. These opportunities include enhanced advocacy for available and accessible services to support the health and wellbeing of women living with HIV as they exercise their rights to have a family. People living with HIV, especially women living with HIV must be at the centre of efforts to stop vertical transmission.
