The Global Network of People living with HIV during its advocacy noted there is limited knowledge about the sexual and reproductive health of people living with HIV. In many places the knowledge that does exist does not reach the policy makers and sexual and repoductive health workers.

To amend this shortcoming GNP+ in 2008-2009 commissioned research into the sexual and reproductive health needs of HIV-discordant couples. In 2010 GNP+ adapted the Advancing the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Human Rights of People living with HIV Guidance Package to become a research tool, which has been used to do research in the countries in which GNP+, the World AIDS Campaign and national networks of people living with HIV are jointly implementing the Leadership through Accountability programme.

Giving HIV a place: Coping Strategies and Life Choices of HIV discordant couples

Media Statement AIDS2010: Recognising HIV discordance and addressing the needs of discordant couples should form an integral part of global and national responses to the HIV epidemic. Where the transmission and acquisition of HIV by definition take place in relationships where one person is HIV-positive and the other HIV-negative, it is important to understand coping strategies and life choices in HIV discordant relationships and to learn from them for global HIV prevention efforts.
