Violation of human rights and breaches of medical confidentiality by the Greek Police and Health Authorities

Joint news release GNP+ and NSWP

As part of a Government authorised crackdown on hundreds of unlicensed brothels around Greece, sex workers are being arrested, submitted to forced HIV testing and facing criminal charges without recourse to due process, as well as being publically identified in the media.

As a result of these actions women are to face prosecution on charges of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm merely because they are HIV positive. There is no proof of exposure or transmission to others nor is it clear that any of these women knew their HIV status prior to this test. They are facing further charges for misdemeanours related to alleged illegal prostitution.

GNP+ welcomes new WHO Couple HIV Testing and Counselling Guidelines

The Global Network of People living with HIV welcomes the release of the World Health Organization’s “Guidance on Couples HIV Testing and Counselling and Antiretroviral Therapy for Treatment (ART) and Prevention in Serodiscordant Couples: Recommendations for a public health approach”. Other recommendations include offering antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV prevention to HIV-discordant couples.

GNP+ supports the specific attention paid in the Guidance to the sexual and reproductive health and rights of serodiscordant couples. Following a study amongst HIV-discordant couples conducted in 2009[i], GNP+ concluded that the needs of HIV-discordant couples have received insufficient attention in the research and policy agenda.

24 March, 2012: The Global Network of People living with HIV (GNP+) recognises this World TB Day, the annual day to focus attention on tuberculosis, by calling for a paradigm shift to address the world’s leading cause of death for people living with HIV.

According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis (TB) is responsible for one in four HIV-related deaths. Globally, around one third of all people living with HIV also have TB. While people living with HIV, and especially children, are 21-34 times more likely to develop active TB due to a weakened immune response, the loss of 350,000 people living with HIV in 2010[i] to a curable disease is unacceptable.
