Indonesia, Malawi, Senegal and Tanzania join the HIV Leadership through Accountability family

Indonesia, Malawi, Senegal and Tanzania are the third round of countries partnering in the HIV Leadership though Accountability programme, spear-headed by the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) and World AIDS Campaign (WAC). This five year programme (2008-2013) combines specific HIV evidence-gathering tools by and for PLHIV, national civil society advocacy platforms and targeted advocacy for Universal Access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

Following consultations with regional and national stakeholders, Indonesia, Malawi, Senegal and Tanzania have joined the programme in its third year.

GNP+ and WAC are excited by the opportunity to work with networks and organisations in these four countries and to support the national partners in implementing the Leadership through Accountability programme.

Results from countries already participating in the HIV Leadership through Accountability programme demonstrate that national networks of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) can and do engage in evidence-gathering, and convert advocacy into evidence-informed advocacy. Furthermore, the evidence gathered supports the development of policy change and programmatic action, ensuring the leadership of PLHIV.  Moreover, it is becoming clear that the effective delivery of campaigns requires broad-based partnerships and appropriate funding.

The Leadership through Accountability programme is a collaboration between national networks of PLHIV, national civil society organisations, GNP+ and WAC. In brief, the aim of the programme is to build evidence as to why it is important to achieve Universal Access, and explore how this can be implemented in practice through the meaningful involvement of PLHIV.

To date, the programme has been implemented by national PLHIV networks and Civil Society partners in the seven countries. Round one countries include: Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia . Round two countries include: Cameroon, Ethiopia, Moldova and South Africa (Eastern Cape Province).

The HIV Leadership though Accountability programme is funded by UKaid from the Department for International Development (DFID)
