Candlelight Memorial demands governments’ commitment to improve the lives of PLHIV

ICM_2011-W150On Sunday 15 May 2011, tens of thousands of people worldwide will light a candle on occasion of the 28th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial. Community-based organizations in some 115 countries will use the event to remember those who have lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses, to support those living with HIV and affected by its impact and to spur calls to action for greater awareness.

Free trade should not block access to life-saving medicines

Activists for HIV treatment in Asia are continuing protests to prevent trade restrictions which would block access to life-saving generic HIV medicines. The European Union and India are currently negotiating a new free trade agreement, which has given rise to fears that the agreement will influence the production and export of generic medications. Thousands of demonstrators in India, Indonesia, Korea, and Malaysia amongst others, have protested against the inclusion of intellectual property rights in the EU-India Free Trade agreement.

Without treatment, no prevention say people living with HIV

In 2001 the United Nations General Assembly committed to achieve universal access to HIV treatment, prevention, care and services by 2010. Today increasing access to treatment has saved millions of lives, and substantial increases in HIV prevention and treatment efforts are making an impact on the epidemic in many countries[i].  

However, still only 36 percent of people living with HIV in need of treatment are receiving it[ii]. To really change the global epidemic the scale up of treatment access, in combination with other prevention methods, must be sustained.

A commitment to the HIV response is a commitment to human rights

The Global Network of People living with HIV (GNP+) and the World AIDS Campaign say that to ensure continued success in the HIV response, policies and programmes must respect and protect the human rights of those most affected by HIV.

The 2010 Global Update on the AIDS Epidemic by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) suggests that significant progress has been made in advancing access to HIV prevention, treatment, support and care over the past ten years, but notes that human rights approaches are crucial to further progress.

La Commission européenne devrait faire attention à l’impact mortel de l’Accord de libre-échange UE-INDE

Amsterdam, 5 novembre 2010 – Le Global Network of People living with HIV se joint à Médecins Sans Frontières pour inviter la Commission européenne à arrêter de promouvoir des politiques susceptibles de mettre la vie en danger dans ses négociations commerciales avec l’Inde.

La Commission européenne négocie actuellement un accord de libre-échange avec l’Inde qui comporte des politiques et des accords qui limiteront fortement l’accès aux médicaments à coût abordable pour les populations des pays en développement.
