New Prevention Technologies

GNP+ supports the research and development of new prevention technologies (NPTs). Research and development of any health related technology always raises questions about safety, drug resistance, testing and access as well as other ethical issues, especially for people living with HIV.

Leadership of people living with HIV in NPT research and development continues to be crucial, particularly now as scientists, researchers and advocates explore the possibilities of ARV-based prevention, specifically pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and some microbicides.

Over the last year a NPT Working Group driven by people living with HIV has exchanged  information and held discussion through Positive Community, GNP+'s online discussion forum. The engagement of people living with HIV in key consultations, meetings and other activities, GNP+ places people living with HIV at the fore front in supporting these debates and processes to be properly informed.

Unpacking HIV stigma in prevention trials

The Working Group on New Prevention Technologies (NPTs) during one of its teleconference meetings was joined by Ms Mitzy Gafos, principal investigator of the PRO 2000 Microbicide Trial in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. Kwazulu Natal has a high prevalence of HIV, where half of the women between 25 and 29 years are living with HIV.

NPT Working Group

GNP+ has established a Working Group on New Prevention Technologies (NPTs). The Working Group, which consists of 12 experts living with HIV from across the world, aims to support the process of documenting the experiences and perspectives of people living with HIV on NPTs, with a particular focus on those that are based on Anti-Retroviral medications.

International Rectal Microbicides Advocates

GNP+ participates in the Steering Committee of IRMA, a network of International Rectal Microbicides Advocates with over 800 members, which advocates for accelerated research, development and access to safe, effective, acceptable and accessible rectal microbicides.

Factsheet on '€˜Microbicides and HIV-positive women'

GNP+ collaborated with the Global Campaign for Microbicides and ICW to develop a factsheet on ‘Microbicides and HIV-positive women’ (2009). The factsheet highlights critically important issues that the microbicides field raises for HIV positive women, including the benefits of microbicides, safety concerns, and the specific support needs of women who seroconvert during trials.
