GNP+ endorses “Undetectable equals Untransmittable” (U=U)

The Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) is proud to announce its full endorsement for the “Undetectable equals Untransmittable” (U=U) Consensus Statement developed by the Prevention Access Campaign. GNP+ celebrates the evidence that viral suppression equals prevention. We believe that as a community we should use the latest scientific evidence, such as U=U, in our advocacy efforts towards universal access for treatment and diagnostic access for all people living with HIV in all their diversity worldwide, especially in the global south where many countries still fall short in offering optimal treatment options and there is limited access to diagnostics, including viral load tests.

The Third U=Unequal reads: (quotes taken from the prevention access website)

“There are numerous economic, social, structural, and legal barriers that intersect in someone’s life and may make it difficult or impossible to reach an undetectable viral load.”

Our challenge for the U=U community is to continue to fight for universal access for all people with HIV regardless of what barriers may exist and regardless of where they may live.”

GNP+ recognizes the multiple barriers in many parts of the world to reach undetectable viral loads and/or to monitor viral load counts and we will continue our advocacy efforts for universal access for all people living with HIV.

GNP+ chair, Javier Hourcade Bellocq said: “On behalf of GNP+, I am happy to communicate our endorsement and support to the U=U campaign and acknowledge the importance of bringing scientific evidence to reduce HIV related stigma, discrimination, and potentially eradicate the criminalization of HIV transmission. GNP+ works with networks of people living with HIV globally and advocates to increase access to universal treatment and high quality care. Working with the Prevention Access Campaign will create synergies among both organizations to reach our goals.“

About GNP+:

GNP+ works with communities of people living with HIV, regardless of whether they are geographic or identity based, to challenge governments and global leaders to improve access and quality of essential HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services. Using the power of evidence-based advocacy we can improve the HIV response and the lives of people living with HIV.

About the Prevention Access Campaign

Prevention Access Campaign’s Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) is a growing global community united to clarify and communicate the revolutionary and widely unknown fact that people living with HIV on effective treatment cannot sexually transmit HIV. U=U was launched in early 2016 by a group of people living with HIV who created a Consensus Statement with global experts to clear up confusion about the science of U=U. That Statement was the genesis of a movement that is sharing the U=U message to dismantle HIV stigma, improve the lives of people with HIV, and advocate for universal access for all people living with HIV to save lives and bring us closer to ending the epidemic.
